DescriptionThe whole story▼
Fully loaded with hard cases and a tent, an R 1200 GS Adventure coming down an Alpine pass asks a great deal of its front brake. The big tank and long-travel suspension make it a machine for distance, and distance often includes long descents where the brakes work for minutes at a time. Accossato lists the DK006 for the GS Adventure from 2010 to 2018. It is a fixed front disc in one steel piece, 305 mm across, and in the maker's words it can replace the disc of original equipment directly.
Key Features
- Fixed front brake disc for the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, 2010 to 2018
- Also listed for the Triple Black edition of 2011
- One-piece construction, steel according to Accossato
- 305 mm outside, 181 mm inside, 5 mm thick
- Interchangeable with the original equipment disc, per Accossato
- Printed minimum thickness for straightforward wear checks
- Sold singly; the GS Adventure needs two for the front
- No German ABE documented, intended for the track
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato says that careful work on tolerances and a considered choice of raw material stand behind its discs, together with experience gained in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3. The DK006 turns that into a simple part: a single steel disc with no rivets, 305 mm across its outer edge, with a 181 mm opening at the centre and a 5 mm friction face. The company also points to the modest weight of its discs as a help to steering, something a rider notices on a large and heavy travel bike.
Long Descents With Luggage
On a loaded R 1200 GS Adventure, the front brake turns speed into heat, and on a long pass descent that heat has little time to escape. Riders who keep the lever squeezed through a string of hairpins often notice the result at the bottom: a softer feel, a smell from the wheels, perhaps a disc that has changed colour. The engine is the first line of defence. Choose a lower gear before the descent begins, let the boxer hold the speed on the straights and brake firmly but briefly before each bend instead of dragging the pads all the way down. Use the rear brake as well, because it shares the load. At the bottom, avoid waiting at a junction with the front lever held hard, since pads clamped against a very hot disc can leave deposits on it. A disc that has been overheated repeatedly shows bluish patches or an uneven surface; when that appears, measure it against the printed minimum and replace it along with the pads if in doubt.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK006 for the R 1200 GS Adventure from 2010 to 2018, including the Triple Black edition of 2011. For this model it is the only Accossato disc named. The Adventure runs two discs at the front and the price is for one; order two for a complete change and measure the existing disc first, which should read 305 mm across.
Road Approval
As far as we know, no road approval papers exist for the DK006: no German ABE, no type approval. We supply it for track riding and competition.
