Staub ist ein Problem für das ganze Motorrad. Er nagt an der Kette, setzt sich in Bremsbelägen fest, arbeitet sich an Gabeldichtungen vorbei und verkürzt die Lebensdauer jedes ungeschützten Lagers. Fast all dieser Schaden kündigt sich an – er ist sichtbar, hörbar oder spürbar, und wird mit Teilen repariert, die für den Preis eines Nachmittags über den Ladentisch gehen. Die Ansaugung ist die Ausnahme. Sie ist der eine Weg, auf dem in der Luft schwebender Grieß ins Innere des Motors gelangt, wo nichts kontrolliert werden kann, nichts sich an einem bestimmten Tag bemerkbar macht, und die eventuelle Reparatur der Motor selbst ist. Diese Asymmetrie ist das ganze Argument für ein feineres Element, und genau das bietet der Sprint Filter P14 SM289P14 an der H'ness: 14-Mikron-Filterung, wo das Standard-P08-Gewebe bei 80 arbeitet.

Der eine Weg ohne Rückweg
Alles nachgeschaltet vom Filter ist eine Laufoberfläche oder ein Sensor. Was das Element verpasst, durchquert die Drosselklappe, trifft auf den Kanal und dann die Zylinderwand, und ein Teil davon wird an den Kolbenringen vorbei in die Ölwanne gewischt, wo das Öl es bis zum nächsten Ölwechsel in Umlauf hält. Nichts davon erzeugt ein Geräusch, eine Warnleuchte oder eine Markierung auf einem Prüfblatt; es zeigt sich Jahre später als ein Motor, der mehr Öl verbraucht als seine Nachbarn. Filterung ist eine Versicherung gegen eine Rechnung, die nie einzeln aufgeführt wird, und genau deshalb ist sie meist das Letzte, wofür jemand Geld ausgibt.
Der Preis des feineren Mediums
Es lohnt sich, klarzustellen, dass dies ein Kompromiss ist, kein Upgrade. Ein engerer Weg hält mehr zurück und lässt weniger durch: 1.800 l/m²/sek gegenüber den 5.050 des P08. Der Grund, warum es an der H'ness CB350 funktioniert, ist Rechnerei, nicht Enthusiasmus – ein niedrigtouriger 350-cc-Einzylinder, bei Teillast gefahren, ruft nie die Reserve ab, die das Standardgewebe in der Hinterhand hält, sodass die Abgabe eines Teils davon nichts ändert, was der Fahrer genutzt hat. Was sich ändert, ist, wie bald das Element Aufmerksamkeit verlangt, da ein feineres Medium mehr von dem sammelt, was durch es hindurchgeht.
Pflege und Reinigung
Zwei Servicestufen, beide enden gleich. Die übliche ist Druckluft an der sauberen Seite, nach außen geblasen. Die intensivere ist lauwarmes Wasser mit einem milden Reinigungsmittel, gespült bis das Wasser klar abläuft. So oder so trocknet es anschließend an der Luft – nie mit Hitze, nie in Flammennähe – und geht trocken zurück in den Luftfilterkasten, ohne irgendeinen Ölschritt.
