Der Staub, der für einen Motor zählt, ist nicht der Staub, den man sehen kann. Grobe Partikel, Spreu und Insekten werden von jedem Element in vernünftigem Zustand aufgehalten; was Zylinderlaufbahn und Kolbenringe verschleißt, ist der feine mineralische Anteil, leicht genug, um über einer unbefestigten Straße lange nach dem verschwundenen Vorderfahrzeug in der Luft zu hängen. Die Honda CB400X ist in dieser Familie die Maschine, die am ehesten auf solche Straßen gelenkt wird – aufrecht, mit hohem Lenker, gekauft von Leuten, die die Schotterabkürzung durchs Tal statt der asphaltierten Umgehung nehmen. Der Sprint Filter P14 CM220P14 ist speziell für diesen Anteil gebaut: ein trockenes Vliesmedium, das bis 14 Mikron filtert, während der Standard-P08 bei 80 arbeitet.
Hauptmerkmale

- Druckluft für die routinemäßige Reinigung, Wasser bei Bedarf, und dasselbe Element unbegrenzt wieder im Einsatz
- Für die Lebensdauer des Motorrads ausgelegt und zwei Jahre garantiert
Partikelgröße, nicht Partikelmenge
Zwei Filter können in einer Saison dasselbe Staubgewicht durchlassen und dabei völlig unterschiedlichen Schaden anrichten, denn Schaden folgt der Partikelgröße, nicht der Masse. Das grobe Material wird überall aufgefangen und zählt am wenigsten. Das feine Material erreicht den Zylinder, und genau in diesem Bereich entscheidet sich der Unterschied zwischen 80 Mikron und 14 Mikron. Das ist das ganze Argument für den P14 bei einem abseits des Asphalts gefahrenen Motorrad: nicht, dass er mehr filtert, sondern dass er kleiner filtert – und beim Kleinen entsteht der Verschleiß.
Der Teil der Abmachung, den niemand erwähnt
Ein feineres Medium setzt sich früher zu. Das muss es – es fängt Material auf, das ein gröberes Gewebe hätte durchgelassen, und dieses Material muss irgendwo hin. Der P14 verlangt deshalb häufiger nach dem Kompressor als ein P08 im selben Luftfilterkasten, und bei einer regelmäßig auf trockenem Schotter gefahrenen CB400X bedeutet das, bei jeder Wartung statt jeder zweiten hinzuschauen. Der Ausgleich ist, dass dieses Hinschauen nichts kostet: Das Element kommt heraus, wird durchgeblasen und geht zurück. Nichts wird verbraucht, nichts wird bestellt, und der CM220P14, der herauskam, ist derselbe, der zurückgeht.
Pflege und Reinigung
Druckluft, von der sauberen Seite angesetzt und nach außen gearbeitet, erledigt fast alles, was ein staubiger Sommer hinterlässt. Was sie nicht löst, kommt mit lauwarmem Wasser und einem milden Reinigungsmittel heraus, gespült, bis das Wasser klar durchläuft. An der Luft trocknen, nie mit Hitze und nie mit einer Flamme, und trocken wieder einsetzen – das Medium arbeitet trocken und bleibt sein ganzes Leben lang ungeölt.
