Sort the media offered for this airbox by price and something odd happens: the finer element is the cheaper one. The PM164P14 holds back particles down to 14 microns and costs roughly three quarters of what the standard P08 costs. That single fact settles an argument the specification sheet keeps restarting, because it shows the range is not a ladder with a best rung at the top. It is a line, and every step along it is paid for in airflow — 1,800 l/m²/sec here against 5,050 for the P08. The only question on a Kawasaki Ninja 500 is which of those two currencies the bike actually spends.
Key Features
- A dry technical nonwoven rather than a weave: dirt is caught through the depth of the fibre mat
- 14 microns of retention at 1,800 l/m²/sec — more held back, less air passed, by design
- No oil at any stage, so nothing can migrate downstream onto sensors or wash out in rain
- Roughly double the working area of a conventional performance element
- Drops into the series airbox in the paper panel's place; no modification and no remap
- Cleaned and reused across the life of the bike, with two years of warranty
One road, sampled a thousand times
Commuting has an unusual property as a duty cycle: the air is not varied, it is the same stretch of it over and over. A Ninja 500 that runs the same twenty kilometres twice a day is not sampling the world's air, it is sampling one road, in one season, behind the same traffic. That makes the medium a decision you can take from evidence instead of from a category name. Pull the element after a season and look at what it caught and where. Even loading across the panel, fine grey deposit and no grit is the signature of traffic-borne dust, and that is precisely the fraction a coarser weave lets through.
Where this is the wrong element
Say it plainly, because the catalogue will not. A Ninja 500 used for trackdays should stay on the P08: sustained work at the top of the rev range is the one condition where 1,800 l/m²/sec becomes a real ceiling rather than a number on a page, and a finer medium also loads sooner, so the interval shortens. Nor does any of this make the bike quicker — a drop-in filter never does. What the P14 buys is a smaller fine fraction reaching the bores on roads where that fraction is what the air is mostly made of.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air, applied to the clean face of the PM164P14, drives the load back out through the surface that collected it; work across the whole panel rather than holding the nozzle in one spot. If a wash is needed, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and a thorough rinse will do it. Dry it in moving air only, never with heat or a flame, and refit it dry — a nonwoven takes longer to dry through than it looks. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the standard airbox of the Kawasaki Ninja 500 / EX 500 built from 2018 to 2026, one of eleven machines that share this panel, from the Ninja 250 to the Bimota KB399. The full list is in the Fitment tab.
