Zwei Zylinder stellen einen Luftfilterkasten vor eine andere Aufgabe als einer. Ein Einzylinder saugt einmal pro zweiter Umdrehung an und lässt dem Kasten danach Zeit, sich zu erholen; der Paralleltwin der R3 saugt im selben Zeitraum zweimal an, abwechselnd, sodass die Anfrage mit doppelter Frequenz und deutlich kürzeren Pausen zwischen den Ereignissen eintrifft. Deshalb wird ein Filtermedium als Durchsatzrate und nicht als Kapazität bewertet: Das P08-Gewebe lässt 5.050 Liter pro Quadratmeter und Sekunde durch, und dieses Element bietet rund doppelt so viel Oberfläche wie andere Performance-Filter. Der Sprint Filter P08 PM44S macht eine serienmäßige R3 nicht schneller — das schafft kein Filter, der in einen unveränderten Luftfilterkasten passt —, aber er ist die Version dieses Bauteils mit der größten Arbeitsfläche und den geringsten Einbußen, während er sich zusetzt.

Fläche ist die einzig verbliebene Stellschraube
Der Luftfilterkasten dieses Motorrads ist ein fest vorgegebenes Volumen an einem festen Ort, geformt um die Rahmenholme und den Tank, und daran kann kein Filter etwas ändern. Was sich ändern lässt, ist das, was darin sitzt: wie viel Filtermedium sich auf derselben Fläche unterbringen lässt und wie frei ein Quadratmeter dieses Mediums atmet. Die Antwort von Sprint Filter ist eine einzelne Gewebelage, die sich über rund die doppelte entfaltete Fläche erstreckt, sodass jeder Quadratmeter nur die halbe Arbeit leisten muss und sich das Gewebe langsamer zusetzt. Bei einem Motor, der den Kasten doppelt so oft leert wie ein Einzylinder, ist genau das der entscheidende Punkt.
Wo dieses Gewebe im Sortiment steht
Sprint Filter hat für das trockene P08 eine Rückhalterate von 93,13 Prozent bei 100-Mikron-Testpartikeln gemessen, gegenüber 76,42 Prozent bei einem vierlagigen geölten Baumwollelement. Für härteren Untergrund gibt es engmaschigere Gewebe — das P037 mit 37 Mikron und 4.500 Litern pro Quadratmeter und Sekunde, das P14 mit 14 Mikron und 1.800 —, und jedes von ihnen hält mehr zurück, auf Kosten des Durchflusses. Das ist ein Kompromiss und keine Rangfolge, und bei einem kleinen Twin, der sein Arbeitsleben überwiegend im hohen Drehzahlbereich verbringt, ist das P08 die Variante, die den Durchfluss schützt.
Pflege und Reinigung
Die Reihenfolge zählt mehr als der Aufwand. Zuerst Luft, von der sauberen Seite nach außen — das reicht für die meisten Services. Danach Wasser, lauwarm und mit einem milden Reinigungsmittel, gespült, bis es klar durchläuft. Zuletzt vollständig an der frischen Luft trocknen — nie mit Hitze, nie über offener Flamme —, bevor der PM44S trocken wieder eingesetzt wird. Bei keinem Schritt dieser Routine kommt Öl zum Einsatz.
