Ein Boxer-Zweizylinder überzeugt im unteren Drehzahlbereich. Die R 1250 R läuft am besten, wenn sie ab drei- oder viertausend Umdrehungen in einem höheren Gang zieht, als sinnvoll erscheint, und genau dort verbringen die meisten Besitzer die meiste Zeit. Es ist zugleich, unpraktisch für den Zubehörhandel, der Bereich des Drehzahlbands, in dem ein Luftfilter am wenigsten zählt. Das Luftvolumen, das ein Motor pro Sekunde zieht, steigt mit der Drehzahl, und mit ihm der Widerstand, den jeder Filter ihm entgegensetzt; bei den Drehzahlen, um die dieses Motorrad herum konzipiert ist, ist dieser Widerstand gering. Gut zu wissen, bevor man irgendetwas für den Ansaugtrakt kauft, dieses Element eingeschlossen.

Wofür ist es also da
Nicht für Leistung. Diese Veränderung bringt keine nennenswerte Mehrleistung, und ein Angebot, das etwas anderes andeutet, beschreibt ein anderes Produkt. Was der PM142S bietet, ist ein Verschleißteil, das aufhört, sich zu wiederholen, und ein Ansaugwiderstand, der bekannt und wiederholbar ist, statt still anzusteigen. Ein Papierelement ist am Morgen des Einbaus am besten und am Tag der Entsorgung am schlechtesten, und alles dazwischen geschieht ohne jedes Signal. Ein gewebtes Element wird herausgenommen, gereinigt und in seinen Ausgangszustand zurückversetzt – ein deutlich unspektakuläreres und deutlich ehrlicheres Angebot.
Der einzige Bereich, in dem der Durchflusswert zählt
Mit einer Nenndurchflussrate von 5.050 l/m²/sek hat das Medium weit mehr Kapazität, als ein Straßen-Boxer je abrufen wird. Kapazität ist kein Verbrauch, und eine große Zahl zu nennen ist nicht dasselbe wie sie auszunutzen. Wo der Wert seinen Zweck erfüllt, ist am oberen Ende des Drehzahlbands, beim gelegentlichen Vollgaszug bis zum Begrenzer – und selbst dort lautet die ehrliche Beschreibung, dass der Filter aufgehört hat, ein Thema zu sein, nicht, dass er zum Vorteil geworden ist. Den Rest der Zeit ist diese Zahl schlicht Reserve, und genau das sollte der Durchflusswert eines Filters sein.
Pflege und Reinigung
Die Reinigung ist trockene Arbeit. Eine Druckluftpistole auf die saubere Seite richten und durch das Medium nach außen blasen, bis es wieder klar ist; das ist die normale Wartung von Anfang bis Ende. Hat sich etwas Fettigeres angesammelt – ein nasser Herbst, Straßenfilm, eine lange Phase im Stadtverkehr –, lösen lauwarmes Wasser mit mildem Spülmittel es, gefolgt von Spülen, bis nichts mehr austritt. Ausschließlich an der Luft trocknen lassen, von jeder Wärmequelle und offener Flamme fernhalten, und trocken einbauen. Das Wartungsblatt liegt im Reiter „Downloads".
