Die interessante Eigenschaft eines durchsatzstarken Gewebes zeigt sich nicht, wenn es neu ist. Sie zeigt sich, nachdem es eine Weile gearbeitet hat. Eine Rennstrecke reicht einem Filter Gummistaub und Splitt von den Auslaufzonen. Jedes Medium sammelt diese Last, und jedes Medium wird dabei restriktiver – aber je geringer der Durchsatz, mit dem ein Medium startet, desto früher beginnt eine bestimmte Menge Schmutz, sich bemerkbar zu machen. Mit 15.000 l/m²/sek im Neuzustand hat der P08 F1-85 mehr Spielraum, um schmutzig zu werden, bevor sich sein Widerstand verändert, und dieser Spielraum ist der eigentliche Grund, warum Racing-Medien auf Durchsatz ausgelegt werden. Die Thruxton 1200 RS ist die Maschine dieser Familie, die am ehesten in Bedingungen unterwegs ist, in denen dieses Argument greift.

Wie sich ein Medium beim Zusetzen verhält
Was ein Gewebe vom anderen unterscheidet, ist die Steigung danach: wie stark der Druckabfall pro Gramm aufgefangenen Staubs steigt. Ein durchsatzstarkes Gewebe mit großer Filterfläche – Sprint Filter faltet in dasselbe Serien-Gehäuse etwa die doppelte Fläche anderer Performance-Filter – verteilt diese Last dünn und steigt langsam. Das lohnt sich an einem langen, heißen Tag, an dem sich der letzte Lauf wie der erste anfühlen soll. Es geht um Konstanz, nicht darum, hoch zu starten.
Wofür die Rechnung tatsächlich steht
Bezahlt wird dieser Spielraum nicht mit Schutz. Die 85 im Namen ist keine Porengröße, und im eigenen Test von Sprint Filter hält der F1-85 95,22 % der 100-Mikron-Partikel zurück, der P08 93,13 % – ein anderes, patentiertes Gewebe, das mehr durchlässt und etwas mehr zurückhält, kein gröberes Tuch. Entscheidend ist an einer Thruxton RS, ob der Motor den Durchsatz nutzen kann. Auf der Straße gefahren, mit Serien-Ansaugung und -Auspuff und nach Kilometerstand gewartet, kann er das selten, und für dieses Motorrad ist der standardmäßige 80-µm-P08 die vernünftige Antwort; wo die Straßen staubig sind, geht der 14-µm-P14 weiter in Richtung Feinstaubschutz. Keines der beiden ist der bessere Filter.
Pflege und Reinigung
Was das zwischen zwei Sessions praktikabel macht, ist die Geschwindigkeit: Druckluft von der sauberen Seite nach außen, und der PM217S F1-85 ist in wenigen Minuten wieder in der Airbox. Alles Hartnäckigere verlangt Wasser mit einem milden Reinigungsmittel, gespült, bis das Wasser klar bleibt. Getrocknet wird vollständig an der frischen Luft, nie mit Hitze und nie mit Flamme, und das Element kommt trocken zurück – zu keinem Zeitpunkt wird geölt.
