Das ist die Beschreibung einer Rennstrecke. Die R 1250 R ist derweil ein Motorrad ganz ohne Verkleidung. Was auch immer der Motor zu leisten bereit wäre, der Fahrer hängt im Fahrtwind und hält sich mit zwei Armen fest, und bei einem nackten Boxer geben die Arme lange vor dem Ansaugtrakt auf.

Wie lange Vollgas tatsächlich anhält
Auf öffentlicher Straße überlebt dieser Zustand ein, zwei Sekunden zwischen Gangwechseln und wird dann durch Verkehr, eine Kurve oder das Gesetz beendet. Ohne Verkleidung endet er noch schneller, denn Geschwindigkeit auf einer unverkleideten Maschine ist körperliche Arbeit, und diese Arbeit steigt steil an. Der Nenndurchsatz von 15.000 l/m²/sek, den dieses Gewebe trägt, ist eine Obergrenze, keine Lieferleistung, und eine Obergrenze lohnt sich nur zu bezahlen, wenn etwas tatsächlich in ihre Nähe kommt. Das Standardelement für denselben Luftfilterkasten ist mit 5.050 l/m²/sek spezifiziert und liefert jeden Liter, den ein Straßenboxer je verlangt hat.
Wann die Bestellung dennoch richtig ist
Trackdays, und wenig sonst. Verbringt die R 1250 R einen Teil ihres Jahres auf einer geschlossenen Rennstrecke, wo eine Drosselklappenstellung bewusst über eine Gerade gehalten und zwanzig Minuten am Stück wiederholt wird, hört das durchflussstärkste Gewebe der Baureihe auf, bloße Dekoration zu sein. Was es nicht ist: ein Leistungsteil. Der PM142S F1-85 macht eine Standard-R-1250-R nicht spürbar stärker, denn ein Element in einem unveränderten Luftfilterkasten ist nicht die Quelle von Leistung. Es kostet fast das Dreifache des Standardelements für dieses Gehäuse, und der Aufpreis kauft allein einen Durchsatzwert – das trockene Polyester, der Verzicht auf Öl, die Wartung mit Druckluft und die ausgelegte Lebensdauer gehören zu jedem Element der Familie gleichermaßen.
Pflege und Reinigung
Im gewöhnlichen Fall trockene Arbeit: ein Luftstrahl an der sauberen Seite angesetzt und nach außen geblasen, sodass alles, was das Gewebe aufgefangen hat, in die Richtung entweicht, aus der es kam. Hinterlässt Straßenfilm etwas, das Luft nicht löst, heben handwarmes Wasser und etwas mildes Reinigungsmittel es ab, und das Gewebe wird gespült, bis das Wasser klar bleibt. Getrocknet wird in bewegter Luft, weit entfernt von jeder Wärmequelle oder Flamme, denn Polyester wird eher durch Hitze als durch Schmutz zerstört. Es kommt trocken zurück.
