Wo ein flacher Bogen seinen Platz hat
An einem kleinen Einzylinder oder Twin muss der Auspuff den Kopf verlassen, den Rahmen passieren und an einer Dämpferaufnahme ankommen — und diese Geometrie ist selten ein rechter Winkel. Dreißig Grad ist das Maß, mit dem eine Strecke in die richtige Richtung kippt, ohne einen scharfen Richtungswechsel.
Zwei davon hintereinander ergeben sechzig. Drei ergeben einen rechten Winkel in drei leichten Schritten statt in einem harten — und eine Gassäule merkt den Unterschied.
Rückfederung
Edelstahl bleibt nicht dort, wo er gebogen wurde. Aus der Maschine gelöst federt er um vier bis acht Grad zurück, ein fertiger 30°-Bogen muss also auf gut sechsunddreißig gezogen werden.
Ein Werksbogen hat das bereits berücksichtigt. Er kommt mit gemessenen dreißig Grad an — was man von den meisten ersten Versuchen zu Hause nicht sagen kann.
Zweiunddreißig Millimeter
Ein gängiger Krümmerdurchmesser an Maschinen zwischen 250 und 400 cm³ und eine sinnvolle Verbindungsgröße dort, wo die Serienanlage Ähnliches verwendet hat. Klein genug, um an einem bescheidenen Motor die Gasgeschwindigkeit zu halten, groß genug, um ihn nicht abzuschnüren.
Die geraden Enden
Jeder Bogen kommt mit einem kurzen geraden Abschnitt an beiden Enden. Dieses Stück ist es, woran Sie spannen, schneiden und schweißen — auf der Krümmung zu schweißen geht, ist aber deutlich schwerer rechtwinklig zu halten.
Planen Sie die Schnitte so, dass die geraden Enden erhalten bleiben. Es ist der häufigste Fehler beim Anpassen eines Bogens.
Strömung durch einen flachen Bogen
Jeder Richtungswechsel kostet Druck, und der Verlust steigt steil mit dem Winkel. Ein 30°-Bogen bei großzügigem Radius ist beinahe kostenlos, ein 90er bei gleichem Radius nicht. Wo sich eine Strecke aus flachen statt scharfen Bögen bauen lässt, sollte man das tun — die Teile kosten dasselbe, und der Motor merkt es bei Teillast.
