Funktion
Als Maß nennt Öhlins Innendurchmesser 16 mm, Schnurstärke 3 mm, Werkstoff NBR 70. Die Vorspannung der Lippe kommt von einer eingelegten Ringfeder. Öhlins setzt je nach Einbaulage unterschiedliche Profile ein. Eine gealterte Dichtung wird hart und verliert die Vorspannung an der Lippe.

Die Ersatzteilliste folgt der Explosionszeichnung; jede Position hat ihre eigene Nummer, auch wenn zwei Teile gleich aussehen. Öhlins hält Positionen oft über Modellgenerationen hinweg gleich, tauscht aber ohne Ankündigung Werkstoffe. Sie können die Nummer auch mit der Rechnung der letzten Wartung abgleichen. Maßgeblich ist die Nummer; Bezeichnungen wiederholen sich bei Öhlins über verschiedene Größen hinweg.
Ein überholtes Federbein arbeitet wieder mit der Dämpfung, die im Datenblatt steht — vorausgesetzt, die Teile stimmen. Bei mehreren gleich beschriebenen Größen entscheidet allein die Nummer, welche gemeint ist. Nach dem Einbau wird die Einheit kurz durchgefedert, bevor sie unter Druck gesetzt wird. Beim Lagern altern Dichtungen; Öhlins gibt deshalb Chargen mit Datum aus.
Die richtige Nummer finden
Nummer 00438-01 und Maß gehören zusammen; weicht eines ab, ist es die falsche Position. Die Staubdichtung hält Schmutz ab, dichtet aber nicht gegen Öldruck. Der Werkstoff muss zur Öltemperatur passen, sonst härtet der Ring aus.
