Wo es sitzt
Ein Maß gibt es hier nicht zu prüfen — Nummer und Explosionszeichnung bestimmen die Position. Eine zu weiche Feder lässt sich mit Vorspannung nicht ausgleichen. Die Feder trägt das Gewicht; der Dämpfer bestimmt nur, wie schnell sie sich bewegt. Der Innendurchmesser muss zur Welle passen, sonst schlägt die Feder an.

Der Wert eines Öhlins-Fahrwerks liegt in seiner Wartbarkeit — Ersatzteile gibt es für Baureihen, die längst aus dem Programm sind. Bei Dichtungen und Führungen entscheidet ein Hundertstel Millimeter darüber, ob die Einheit dicht bleibt. Ist die Nummer bekannt, ist die Zuordnung eindeutig — anders als bei der Beschreibung allein. Kommt die Einheit ohnehin auf die Werkbank, lohnt es sich, die benachbarten Verschleißteile mitzubestellen.
Federn sind Verschleißteile mit langer Lebensdauer, aber keiner unendlichen. Öhlins hält seine Fahrwerke über Einzelteile am Leben; deshalb lässt sich ein fünfzehn Jahre altes Federbein noch überholen statt ersetzen. Die Rate wird in Newton pro Millimeter angegeben und muss zum Gewicht passen. Eine Überholung ist günstiger als ein neues Federbein, solange die tragenden Teile in Ordnung sind. Die Rate bleibt über den Hub konstant, solange die Feder zylindrisch gewickelt ist.
