DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Z900RS is Kawasaki's homage to the 1972 Z1, and its cockpit is deliberately spare. The JP PD KA037 replaces the right-hand switch with a milled Ergal body.

Fifty Years Between Two Motorcycles
The Z1 of 1972 was the bike that established Kawasaki as a maker of large four-cylinder machines, and the Z900RS quotes it closely: the teardrop tank, the ducktail, the round instruments and, on the Candytone paint, the brown and orange scheme itself. It is the most successful retro Kawasaki has built.
A Cockpit Where Everything Shows
Two round analogue dials, chrome-rimmed, with almost nothing between them. Into that setting the standard moulded switchgear is the one component that gives away the model year, which is precisely why owners of these bikes replace it more often than owners of sports machines do.
Modern Underneath
Beneath the styling is a Z900's engine detuned for midrange, traction control and ABS. The right-hand cluster carries the mode selection for that, so the buttons are used regularly rather than decoratively, and they wear the way any modern switchgear does.
Machined Suits the Bike
An aluminium component cut from solid and anodised is closer in spirit to how the original Z1's controls were made than an injection moulding is. That is a subjective argument and it is the one most Z900RS owners actually make.
Either Bolt Pattern
The universal plate accepts both aligned and offset master cylinder clamps, which keeps the option of a brake upgrade open on a bike that is otherwise usually left mechanically standard.
Candytone and Chrome
The Z900RS is sold in colours chosen to quote the 1970s, and the cockpit is where the illusion is thinnest. A machined aluminium control does not pretend to be a period part, but it sits far better against chrome-rimmed dials than a black moulding does.
