The 848 Without Its Fairing
Ducati took the 849 cc Testastretta 11 degree engine, fitted a wide handlebar and removed the bodywork. It made 132 horsepower and it remains one of the better-looking motorcycles the company has built.
The Reasonable Streetfighter
The 1098-based Streetfighter that preceded it was close to unmanageable on a road. The 848 gave up power nobody could use and became a motorcycle people actually rode.
Universal Slots
The clamp takes the original master cylinder and the radial units. On a bike of this age the brake end has frequently been changed already.
Three Anodised Options
Black, red and titanium, each converted into the top layer of the metal. On a naked bike the cockpit is looked at from outside as well as from the saddle.
A Decade of Weather
These are now twelve years old. Moulded switchgear reaches a point where one function answers when it chooses, and what has failed is the terminal rather than the button.
Sealed Contacts
Enclosed within a machined body rather than behind a clipped lid. Nothing on this motorcycle shelters the bar from anything at all.
A Single-Sided Swingarm
The 848 kept it, which on a bike with no bodywork to hide behind does a great deal of visual work. It is the detail people remember about the model.
Ducati's Plug
Pre-wired to the factory connector, so nothing is spliced. The exchange is mechanical and entirely reversible.
A Hundred and Thirty-Two Horsepower
Enough to be genuinely quick and not so much that the front wheel becomes a permanent negotiation. Ducati had learned something from the 1098-based Streetfighter, which was magnificent and close to unusable, and the 848 is what that lesson produced.
