Semi-aktives Öhlins
Die S trug ein elektronisch gesteuertes Fahrwerk, das sich fortlaufend anhand der Inertialplattform anpasste. Bei einem 205-PS-Zweizylinder mit kurzem Radstand verschiebt sich die Last schneller, als irgendeine feste Einstellung folgen könnte.

Aus 1285 cm³, was für einen Zweizylindermotor weiterhin eine außergewöhnliche spezifische Leistung ist. Ducati erreichte das durch eine Hubverlängerung des Superquadro statt durch weiteres Jagen nach Drehzahl.
Geschmiedete Räder und Stylema-Bremssättel
Die späteren S-Modelle trugen Brembos leichteren Monoblock-Bremssattel und geschmiedete Marchesini-Felgen. Ducati stattete die S umfassend aus und ließ kaum etwas Offensichtliches zum Verbessern übrig.
Nur die Gasgriffeinheit
Der Schalterblock bleibt, wo er ist. Dies ist allein das Gehäuse, für Besitzer, deren Schaltereinheit intakt ist und die einfach das gegossene Plastik vom rechten Lenkerende weghaben wollen.
Gefräst statt gegossen
Die Bohrung, in der das Gasgriffrohr läuft, ist gefräst, was die Drehung deutlich länger rund und gleichmäßig hält, als es ein spritzgegossenes Äquivalent schafft.
Schwarze Eloxierung
Eine Oberfläche, in die Oberfläche selbst umgewandelt. Gegen rote Verkleidung und goldenes Fahrwerk ist das die Option, die überhaupt keine Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht.
Ergal 7075
Eine zinkhaltige Luft- und Raumfahrtlegierung mit etwa der doppelten Streckgrenze der Legierungen, die in den meisten gefrästen Zubehörteilen verwendet werden. Sie ist schwerer zu bearbeiten und hält eine Klemmfläche unbegrenzt.
Der Abschied des Zweizylinders
Die 1299 S war das letzte und beste der V2-Superbikes von Ducati. Der V4, der sie ablöste, ist schneller und einfacher, und etliche Leute bevorzugen bis heute dieses Modell.
Immer noch desmodromisch
Ducati schließt seine Ventile mechanisch statt mit Federn, weshalb der Superquadro so große Ventile verwenden und trotzdem drehfreudig bleiben kann. Kein anderer Hersteller hielt das seit Jahrzehnten für den Aufwand wert, und Ducati hat nie ernsthaft erwogen, davon abzurücken.
