Gebaut zur Homologation
Die R existierte, damit Ducati die Panigale in der Superbike-Weltmeisterschaft einsetzen konnte. Titan-Pleuel, ein Zweiring-Kolben, eine leichtere Kurbelwelle und eine Drehzahlgrenze, die niemand von einem Zweizylinder erwartet hätte.

Aus 1198 cm³, mit einer Drehzahlgrenze bei 12.000 U/min. Ducati holte aus einem Zweizylinder Werte heraus, mit denen sich Reihenvierzylinder schwertaten – mit einer Bohrung, die eigentlich nicht so weit sein durfte.
Carbon und Einstellbarkeit
Die R kam mit Carbon-Verkleidung, einem voll einstellbaren Schwingenlagerpunkt und Öhlins an beiden Enden. Sehr wenig blieb serienmäßig, weshalb das gegossene Gasgriffgehäuse umso mehr auffällt.
Nur das Gehäuse
Der Schalterblock bleibt von diesem Teil unberührt. Es ist allein die Gasgriffeinheit, was zu einem Motorrad passt, dessen Schaltereinheit noch einwandfrei ist, dessen Cockpit aber Besseres als Spritzgussplastik verdient.
Gefräste Bohrung
Die Drehung des Rohrs wird von einem Positionssensor erfasst, sodass Spiel zwischen Rohr und Gehäuse zu Ungenauigkeit an den Drosselklappenkörpern wird. Eine gefräste Bohrung hält ihr Maß, während eine gegossene abweicht.
Schwarze Eloxierung
In das Metall umgewandelt. Bei einer R mit Carbonteilen ist Schwarz die Oberfläche, die dem Gespräch, das die Verkleidung bereits führt, nichts hinzufügt.
Ergal statt gewöhnlichem Aluminium
Die 7075er-Legierung enthält Zink und erreicht etwa die doppelte Streckgrenze gewöhnlicher gefräster Legierungen. Bei einem Bauteil, das wiederholt geklemmt und gelöst wird, ist das der Unterschied zwischen einem Gewinde, das hält, und einem, das nicht hält.
Das Ende des Gitterrohrrahmens
Mit der 1199 hörte Ducati auf, Superbikes um einen Stahlrahmen zu bauen. Puristen beschwerten sich zwei Jahre lang, dann entschieden die Rundenzeiten die Debatte.
