Die DesertX fährt den 937er Testastretta mit nach vorn geneigtem und weitgehend ungeschütztem vorderem Zylinderkopf, direkt hinter dem Vorderrad. Alles, was dieses Rad auf einer Schotterstraße aufnimmt, kommt dort an. Diese Abdeckung legt eine Carbonschale zwischen den Kopf und den Stein, der ihn sonst findet.

Was sie tatsächlich schützt
Ein Zylinderkopf ist nichts, was man am Straßenrand repariert. Ein tiefer Treffer auf eine Kühlrippe oder eine Deckelfläche ist bestenfalls kosmetisch und schlimmstenfalls ein langsamer Ölschwitzer, der dreihundert Kilometer später auftaucht. Bei einem Motorrad, das abseits des Asphalts bewegt werden soll, ist es eine einfache Rechnung, hundertfünfzig Euro für ein Opferpaneel davor auszugeben.
Carbon verdient sich seinen Platz hier über das Schlagverhalten und nicht über das Gewicht. Ein Laminat nimmt einen Treffer auf, indem es sich über seine Dicke verformt und zurückkommt; ein Aluminiumschutz gleicher Masse verbeult und bleibt verbeult und gibt mehr vom Schlag an das weiter, was dahinter liegt. Das Teil ist klein, die Ersparnis in Gramm ist also nicht das Argument – das Argument ist, was beim Aufprall passiert.
Nach einem harten Tag kontrollieren
Ein Schutzteil erfüllt seinen Zweck nur, wenn man es kontrolliert. Sehen Sie sich diese Abdeckung nach jedem Aufprall, den Sie im Lenker gespürt haben, richtig an statt nur flüchtig: Ein Kratzer durch die Oberfläche ist kosmetisch und kann bleiben, aber ein Riss im Laminat oder ein sternförmiger Bruch um ein Befestigungsauge heißt, dass das Paneel aufgenommen hat, was es aufnehmen konnte, und vor der nächsten Tour ersetzt werden sollte.
Der Grund, hier streng zu sein: Eine gerissene Abdeckung verteilt einen Aufprall nicht mehr – sie leitet ihn weiter. Gemessen an dem, was Arbeit an einem Zylinderkopf kostet, ist der Tausch keine schwierige Entscheidung.
