Handprotektoren sind das eine Zubehörteil am Reiseenduro, das sich auf jeder einzelnen Fahrt bezahlt macht. Im November halten sie den Fahrtwind von den Knöcheln, im ausgefahrenen Hohlweg einen Ast vom Hebel. Fullsix baut das DesertX-Paar aus Carbon – das klingt nach Stilübung, bis man merkt, wie viel weniger es bei Autobahntempo vibriert als die weichen Originale.

Steifigkeit dort, wo sie zählt
Ein Handprotektor hat zwei Versagensarten. Er kann zu weich sein, dann weicht er im Wind aus, gerät in Resonanz und klappt in dem Moment auf die Finger zurück, in dem er auf etwas Festes trifft. Oder er ist zu spröde, dann zersplittert er und hinterlässt eine scharfe Kante neben der Hand. Der Sinn eines sauber ausgehärteten Carbonlaminats liegt dazwischen: steif genug, um bei 130 km/h die Form zu halten, zäh genug, um einen Schlag wegzustecken und zurückzufedern.
Weil es ein Paar ist, werden die beiden Schalen aus gespiegelten Formen laminiert, nicht ein Teil zweimal verwendet. Das ist für die Anströmung wichtig: Die linke und die rechte Schale der DesertX sind nicht symmetrisch.
Welche Ausführung am Lenker
Handprotektoren liegen die ganze Fahrt über im direkten Blickfeld, und damit ist Blendung hier eine reale und keine theoretische Frage. Hochglänzender Klarlack fängt tiefstehende Wintersonne und wirft sie knapp unterhalb der Augenhöhe zurück. Matt und satin tun das nicht, und deshalb dominieren sie bei genau dieser Artikelnummer.
Roh hat bei Handprotektoren ein zweites Argument. Es sind die Teile, die am ehesten einen Ast, einen Zaunpfahl oder den Boden treffen, und ein Kratzer in rohem Carbon ist aus zwei Metern unsichtbar, während derselbe Kratzer durch einen Klarlack eine weiße Narbe hinterlässt. Wer die DesertX so nutzt, wie sie gedacht ist, fährt mit roh am pragmatischsten.
