DescriptionThe whole story▼
STM's slipper clutch for the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 (2005–2008) is the product of decades of Italian race-engineering heritage — a unit developed not as an afterthought but as a precision instrument, designed from the ground up to transform hard-braking, late-apex riding into a controlled, confident art. Part number FSU-S080 slots directly into the GSX-R's drivetrain and brings genuine slipper technology to the street or circuit without compromise.
Key Features
- Prevents engine over-rev on downshifts, keeping the rear wheel planted and the chassis stable under aggressive braking
- Actively reduces rear wheel hop, improving traction and composure through corner entry
- Significantly lowers the trigger impulse for a highside, adding a critical safety margin at high speeds
- Allows controlled rear wheel slide for confident, sports-oriented riding and more precise corner entry handling
- Diaphragm spring replaces the conventional pressure plate design, eliminating plate flutter and delivering a smoother, more progressive clutch lever release
- Patented ball-ramp mechanism governs the slipper function with precision across the full rev range
- Weight saving of approximately 0.7–0.8 kg over the stock unit by reducing rotating mass, with measurable gains in throttle response and overall GSX-R 1000 performance
Design, Finish and Heritage
STM has been supplying clutch systems to World Superbike and MotoGP teams since the early 1990s, and that lineage is visible in every detail of the FSU-S080. The unit is machined from high-grade aluminium billet, finished to the exacting standards that STM's racing customers demand. The architecture centres on STM's patented ball-ramp system — a mechanism that automatically modulates clutch clamping force during deceleration, progressively reducing back-torque rather than fighting it. Where a standard clutch transmits every lock-up impulse straight into the rear wheel, the FSU-S080 absorbs and releases that energy in a controlled ramp, keeping the tyre in contact with the road and the rider in control of the machine.
On the Road and on Track
For road riders who push into corners with commitment, the slipper function eliminates the stomach-dropping moment when an aggressive downshift upsets the chassis mid-corner. For track riders, it is an essential tool — reducing lap times through the ability to trail-brake later, downshift harder, and carry more speed into slow corners without fear of a rear-end snap. The improved closure control through bends also prevents the front end from tucking under engine-braking loads, giving the GSX-R 1000 a composed, predictable feel that builds confidence lap after lap.
