The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The specification that settles this choice is not printed on the box. It is how often you are prepared to open the airbox. A finer medium fills sooner — that is what finer means — so a 14-micron nonwoven is a commitment to servicing the intake more frequently than the standard weave asks for, not to leaving it alone for longer. Riders who are content with the seat off and an air line in hand on a Sunday will get everything this mat has to offer. Riders who would rather not think about the intake between annual services are better served by the coarser cloth, and there is nothing wrong with that being the honest answer.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven filtering down to 14 microns
- Rated flow 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the 80-micron road weave for this airbox is rated 5,050
- Catalogued for dust, everyday use and long distances
- Series frame and sealing face; the airbox stays exactly as the factory left it
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a conventional performance element
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted; two years of warranty
Frequency is the thing being bought
Count the openings rather than the microns. A medium that holds back more of what passes through it reaches a given state of loading earlier, so the calendar entry that goes with this panel falls more often than the one that goes with the standard weave — and it has to be honoured, because an element left in place until it is visibly dirty has already spent part of its life as a restriction. None of that is a fault in the material. It is the arithmetic of fine filtration, and it is the reason the mat is washable in the first place.
Where 14 microns genuinely answers
Dry regions and dusty summers. High annual mileages. Long spells on roads where lorries and agriculture put a fine load into the air, and city riding where brake and tyre particles arrive in small doses every single day. In that air the finer mat holds back what an 80-micron weave passes, and the airflow it costs is rarely called for on the road anyway. What it will not do is add performance: no drop-in element makes a standard SRK 800 RR noticeably stronger, and a fine medium is chosen for what it stops rather than for what it promises.
Care and cleaning
A nonwoven gives its load back to patient air rather than to force, so keep the line on the clean face and move it steadily across the whole surface. When something greasy resists, hand-warm water with a little mild detergent and a long rinse will finish it. Drying happens in moving air only, because heat ruins the material outright while dirt never does, and the SM266P14 is refitted dry with nothing applied to it.
