The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
This is one product page for two motorcycles, and it deserves two different answers. On a CB1000GT — a sports tourer built to cross borders with luggage — the P14 is one of the most sensible elements the airbox can take: long days, unfamiliar roads, and summer dust from road works that a rider cannot choose to avoid. On a CB1000F, a roadster that mostly lives on tarmac, the same element is much harder to justify. Both motorcycles take it. Usually only one of them needs it.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven that filters down to 14 µm
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec, about a third of the standard P08's 5,050
- Made for demanding conditions: dust, everyday riding in dirty air, long distances
- Same shape and seat as the original panel, a direct fit in the standard airbox with no remap
- Never oiled; cleaned with compressed air and refitted, not replaced
- Specified for the life of the motorcycle, with two years of warranty from the date of purchase
The trade the numbers describe
A nonwoven mat works differently from a woven cloth. Instead of an open grid it builds up a depth of fibres, and that is how it holds back far smaller particles than the P08's 80-micron weave. The price is flow: 1,800 litres per square metre per second against 5,050. At a steady touring pace the engine asks for a small fraction of what either element can pass, so the finer catch comes almost free. The cost appears near full throttle high in the rev range, which is exactly where a loaded GT on a long day spends the least time.
When the P08 is the better choice
A CB1000F ridden on clean roads, a GT that stays on well-kept tarmac, a rider who enjoys the top of the rev counter: for all of them the standard P08 is the better element. No filter makes either motorcycle stronger, and the P14 does not claim to — it is a protection choice, made for air that is genuinely dirty. If that is not the air your bike breathes, the finer mat guards against a problem you do not have, and gives up flow for the privilege.
Care and cleaning
Take PM158P14 out, blow compressed air through it from the clean side outwards and work across the whole mat; most of what a touring summer leaves in it comes away that way. For heavier loads, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until clear. Dry it in moving air at room temperature — no heat gun, radiator or flame — and refit it dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
