The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
A flow rating is a ceiling, and a ceiling only costs you something if you were going to reach it. That is the whole of the choice between this mat and the woven element Sprint Filter lists alongside it, and on a Multistrada 950 it can be settled by counting seconds instead of by argument.
Key Features
- A dry non-woven mat, delivered without oil and never given any afterwards
- Rated to hold particles down to 14 microns, where the standard P08 cloth is rated at 80
- A rated 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow — the side of the exchange that is paid, not received
- Occupies the series airbox in the paper panel's seat, with no bracketry and no reflash
- Emptied with an air line and refitted the same afternoon
- Two years of warranty, counted from the day of purchase
How many seconds a year at full throttle
Flow figures are taken with air pulled steadily through a square metre of medium, and an engine calls for that ceiling only when the throttle is wide open and stays there. A 937 cc twin climbing a pass, crossing a plateau or picking its way along a farm track is almost never in that condition; on ordinary riding the intake asks for a fraction of what either element will pass, and neither one is the part setting the limit. The flow surrendered here is real on the data sheet and close to hypothetical in the saddle.
The half that is not hypothetical
What does change with every minute the engine runs is what gets through. Material finer than the 80 microns the woven element is rated for travels past it and carries on towards the bore, and nothing brings it back out. The 950 is the Multistrada bought by riders who take the unsurfaced ten kilometres rather than plan around them, which is the setting the finer mat exists for. It will not make the motorcycle faster — no element dropped into a standard airbox does, and this one is not offered on that basis — but it changes what reaches the cylinder head.
Care and cleaning
Air first: a line laid against the inner face and worked outwards empties the mat in a couple of minutes. Water is the rare exception — tepid, a little mild detergent, rinsed through until the run-off carries nothing away — after which it must dry in ordinary moving air. Heat is what ends these elements, so keep radiators, hot-air guns and flames well away from it. PM127P14 returns to the box dry, with nothing to spray back on.
