The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two durations are quoted for this element and they are not the same promise. Sprint Filter guarantees it for two years from the date of purchase, and specifies it to last the life of the motorcycle. Neither is doing the other's job: one concerns the making of the part, the other its wearing out. On a Brutale Oro, a machine that tends to be kept rather than traded, knowing which promise covers what is more useful than any single figure on the specification sheet.
Key Features
- Carbon fibre frame carrying the racing cloth — a WorldSBK-specification assembly rather than a moulded panel
- P08 F1-85 polyester woven from 22 µm threads upward, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Retention measured at 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles
- Dry when new and dry after every wash; no oil enters the system at any stage
- Takes the series airbox as it stands — nothing cut, nothing moved, no remap
- Two years of guarantee, on a part specified to last as long as the machine
What each of the two durations covers
A guarantee is a statement about manufacture. For two years, a flaw in the weave, a bond that lets go or a frame out of true is Sprint Filter's problem rather than yours. It says nothing about service life, because a defect and ordinary wear are different events with different causes. The lifetime specification is the second claim and it is conditional in a way the first is not: it assumes the cloth is regenerated the way the maintenance sheet describes. Between the two sits everything an owner physically does with the part, and that middle ground belongs to neither promise.
What ends a lifetime element early
Rarely the road. Heat is the usual culprit — a hot air gun or a radiator pressed into service to hurry drying will deform polyester, and the distortion does not always announce itself before the element is back in the box. Direction is the second: air driven at the dirty face pushes the load deeper into the weave instead of lifting it clear. Refitting while the cloth is still damp is the third. All three happen in a garage, all three are avoidable, and none is covered by anything. None of this is a power argument either, because there is none to make here: an insert filter does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
Servicing R189S F1-85-SBK is subtractive. Things come off it; nothing goes on. The routine is a compressor line held at the clean face and worked outward until the colour of the cloth is even again. Where a dirty spell has left more than air will move, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent take the rest, followed by a rinse until the run-off carries no colour. Then it is left alone until dry through, with every heat source kept away, because heat is what polyester surrenders to first. It goes back untreated. The sheet is filed under Downloads.
