DescriptionThe whole story▼
The 85 in the name of this element is not a micron rating, and on a Speed Triple RS it is worth clearing that up before anything else, because the misreading is common: coarser weave, less protection, a bill for wear that falls due years later. None of that applies. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 is woven from polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, passes 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard P08, and in the maker's own test held back 95.22 % of 100-micron particles where the P08 held 93.13 %. The decision is therefore not about how long you intend to keep the motorcycle, but about whether you will use what you pay for.
Key Features
- Dry polyester in the racing specification: threads from 22 µm in diameter, no oil at any stage
- Rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050 for the standard P08 — the whole point of the medium
- Retention measured at 95.22 % on 100-micron particles, so the coarse end is well held
- Twice the media area, give or take, of a conventional performance element
- Slots into the series airbox as it left the factory, with no remap needed
- Washed rather than thrown away, and warranted for two years from the day you buy it
Why racing chose it
According to Sprint Filter, the F1-85 is the most widely used filter in MotoGP, Moto3, WorldSBK, Supersport and Superstock, and the reason is easy to follow: a competition engine spends whole sessions near maximum airflow, and a patented medium that passes three times the air of the P08 while holding more of the 100-micron test dust gives it that reserve for every session. Take the element out of that regime and put it in a road engine, and nothing turns against you; the reserve is simply called on less often. The maker quotes retention for 100-micron particles only, so that is the figure to judge it by. The real condition is therefore use, not maintenance: how often the RS is held at the top of its rev range, and whether that is worth the higher price over the P08.
Who gets the most from it
The 1050 RS ran for three model years, 2018 to 2020, before the 1200 took the name, and those bikes are moving to second and third keepers. If yours sees track days or is ridden hard on open roads, the flow reserve is something you will actually draw on. If it mostly covers commutes and relaxed weekends, the 80-micron P08 does the job for less money, and the 14-micron P14 is the medium to choose where dust is the main concern. The comfort is that nothing here is irreversible: the element is washable and made to outlast the bike, so a change of mind costs only the swap.
Care and cleaning
Most of the job is done by compressed air, aimed at the clean face so grit is pushed back out the way it entered, and it can be repeated as often as you like. When air alone stops being enough, warm water and a mild detergent finish the job. Keep heat guns and flames well away — it dries in ambient air and goes back in dry. It is listed as PM193S F1-85, and the maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
This page covers the 1050 Triumph Speed Triple RS of 2018 to 2020. Three machines share the element: the Speed Triple R (2016–2017), the Speed Triple RS (2018–2020) and the Speed Triple S (2016–2020). The 1200 RS from 2021 on is a different motorcycle with a different airbox, so match the capacity as well as the name.
