The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Where a Hayabusa of this generation actually competes, a run lasts seconds. Its competition life has been spent largely on drag strips and standing miles: full throttle from rest, a handful of seconds at maximum demand, then a long cool-down and a queue. That is the shape of use a racing air filter is drawn for, and the reason matters. It is not that racing is harder on a filter — it is that racing is short. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 PM70S F1-85 uses a patented racing weave to pass a rated 15,000 litres per square metre per second, and what that costs is charged by the hour of running.
Key Features
- Dry polyester in the racing specification of the P08 range, woven from 22-micron threads upward
- 15,000 litres per square metre per second, the highest rated flow Sprint Filter lists
- Roughly twice the media area of a typical performance element
- Straight swap into the series airbox: nothing cut, nothing rerouted, no remap
- Blown clean with an air line and used again rather than bought again
- Two years of Sprint Filter cover from the purchase date
Seconds of demand, and the bill that follows
A racing weave passes more air and asks to be inspected on a racing rhythm; the 85 in its name is not a pore size, and in the maker's 100-micron test it even retains slightly more than the P08. On a strip the inspection side barely matters, because the engine runs for so little time between rebuilds and because the surface has been swept. That is the whole of the logic, and it does not travel. A road-ridden Hayabusa runs the identical weave for tens of thousands of kilometres, through traffic, roadworks and dry summer verges, and meets the fine dust no published test covers on every one of them while calling on the flow side for seconds at a time.
Reading the retention figures properly
Sprint Filter puts this medium at 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles and the standard P08 at 93.13, with four-layer oiled cotton at 76.42. Those are coarse particles, and coarse particles are not what wears an engine out quietly; the fine fraction that ends up in the oil is outside the measurement. The racing element also costs roughly two and a third times the standard P08 in this fitment. Serviced by hours under load, that is a defensible exchange; serviced by the odometer, the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres is the better-argued part. Dust argues for finer still — P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, P14 at 14 and 1,800, T12 at 7 and 560. And whichever medium goes in, none of them makes a standard Hayabusa noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
Hold an air line to the clean face of the PM70S F1-85 and blow outwards, so the dirt leaves the side it entered. Where a season leaves more than air will move, lukewarm water and a mild detergent do the rest; rinse until the water runs clear. Dry it fully in open air, with no heat gun and no flame near it, and refit it dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Suzuki Hayabusa of 2008 to 2019, seated in the standard airbox. This racing element is listed for that generation alone; see the Fitment tab.
