The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Put the two Sprint Filter data sheets side by side and one line refuses to behave. The P08 in this housing is woven at 80 µm and holds back 93.13 % of 100-micron particles. The P08 F1-85 carries an 85 in its name that reads like a coarser cloth but is not a pore size — and it holds back 95.22 % of the same particles while flowing 15,000 l/m²/sec against the P08's 5,050. More retention, three times the flow, from polyester threads 22 µm in diameter. The ladder people read media by does not apply here, and that settles what this part is: not a P08 with the filtration taken out.
Key Features
- Dry polyester, never oiled — nothing can travel downstream onto the intake sensors
- Rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest flow figure in the Sprint Filter range
- 95.22 % of 100-micron particles held back, against 93.13 % for the P08
- Roughly twice the working cloth of a typical performance filter
- Sits where the paper panel sat: standard airbox, no modification, no remap
- Cleaned and refitted instead of replaced, specified for the life of the motorcycle, two-year guarantee
Two figures, two different statements
A micron rating describes geometry, the aperture the weave leaves open. A retention percentage describes an outcome, what a measurement found still held back. Related, but not the same claim. The familiar rule does hold across the range, and it is a trade, not a ranking: the P14 nonwoven filters at 14 µm and flows 1,800 l/m²/sec, the T12 at 7 µm and 560, each finer step buying retention and paying in flow. The F1-85 sits outside that column altogether, because its 85 is a name rather than a micron rating, which is why a medium is chosen by the use it was made for, not by reading the micron column downwards.
What the flow costs, and when it is spent
This is by some way the dearest of the three ways to fill the airbox. The money buys flow capacity, and capacity is only spent when the engine holds a large demand: wide open, high in the rev range, held there rather than brushed. A road-registered naked with no fairing rarely stays there for more than a few seconds. An insert filter also does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably more powerful. What it does is keep intake restriction low and keep it from creeping upward between services, because a woven element is washed back to the condition it started in. A rider who never reaches those conditions pays for 15,000 l/m²/sec that will never once be visible.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine: hold it against the clean face of the PM158S F1-85 and blow outward, so the dirt leaves the way it came in. When a gritty spell leaves more than air will move, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry in open air and nothing else — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, because heat is what ruins polyester. It goes back in dry and untreated. Fitment & Compatibility
Cut for the airbox of the Honda CB1000 Hornet and Hornet SP built in 2025 and 2026; both versions take the same element. The same code covers the CBR1000RR of 2017 to 2026 and the CB1000F and CB1000GT of 2025 to 2026.
