The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Of the three elements Sprint Filter cuts for the MT 800's airbox, this is the one with the highest flow. The 85 in its name is not a pore size, and it is not a step down in filtration either: the cloth is woven from polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, rated three times higher for flow and, in Sprint Filter’s test, holding back 95.22 % of 100-micron particles against the standard element’s 93.13 %. Offered on a machine whose other option is a 7-micron mat for dust, that is a striking thing to find in the listing, and it deserves a straight answer about who should be buying it.
Key Features
- Dry polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, with a flow figure of 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Measured at 95.22 % retention against 100-micron test particles
- Same shape and same fit as the standard element in the series airbox, with no remap
- Roughly double the filtering area of other performance elements
- Dry throughout its life, never oiled, cleaned with a compressed-air line
- Built for the motorcycle's service life and warranted two years from date of purchase
What the medium was drawn for
Closed courses, where the air has already been swept by a field of machines and the element is pulled and blown out between sessions. By Sprint Filter's own account its filters are the most widely used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock — a manufacturer's statement about where its products are found rather than an independent measurement, and worth taking as exactly that. The specification behind those paddocks assumes a service rhythm nobody keeps on the road.
Why an adventure twin is an awkward home for it
The flow ceiling here is only approached with the throttle held wide and the engine turning hard, which is a small share of the hours a loaded MT 800 puts in. The upkeep a racing weave expects, by contrast, applies to every one of them. Set against that, the standard element is not a handicap and this one is not an upgrade; it costs a little over twice as much and buys a number this motorcycle rarely calls for. Nor does either of them add power to a standard bike. Fit it if the machine has moved to closed courses and the airbox is opened on a race schedule — otherwise the answer is on one of the other two pages.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air directed from the clean face outwards, which for a track element usually means after every session rather than every service. Stubborn film comes off with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed clear. Drying is cold and unhurried — moving air only, never heat and never a flame — and the PM228S F1-85 is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab on this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the CFMOTO MT 800 of 2022 to 2026, one element per machine, and for no other model. The standard and extreme-conditions media for this airbox carry the identical fitment.
