The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Two cylinders ask an airbox a different question than one. A single draws once every second revolution and then leaves the box alone to recover; the R3's parallel twin draws twice in the same span, alternating, so the demand arrives at double the frequency with much shorter gaps between events. That is why a filter medium is rated as a rate rather than a capacity: the P08 weave passes 5,050 litres per square metre per second, and this element carries roughly twice the surface other performance filters offer. The Sprint Filter P08 PM44S will not make a standard R3 faster — nothing that drops into an untouched airbox does — but it is the version of this part with the most area to work with and the least to lose as it fills.
Key Features
- Roughly double the developed filtering surface of a comparable performance element
- Dry P08 polyester, never oiled, so nothing reaches the throttle bodies or their sensors
- 80 micron filtration at 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Woven from polyester threads of 22 microns and upwards
- Fits the series airbox exactly as removed — no modification, no remap
- Washable, reusable and warranted for two years from purchase
Area is the only variable left
The airbox on this bike is a fixed volume in a fixed space, shaped around the frame rails and the tank, and no filter can change that. What can change is what sits inside it: how much medium is folded into the same footprint, and how freely a square metre of that medium breathes. Sprint Filter's answer is a single woven layer spread across roughly twice the developed area, so each square metre is asked to do half the work and the fabric fills more slowly. On an engine that empties the box twice as often as a single, that is the argument that matters.
Where this weave sits in the range
Sprint Filter measured the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent retention of 100 micron test particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton element. Tighter fabrics exist for harder ground — the P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres per square metre per second, the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800 — and each of them keeps more out at the cost of flow. That is a trade rather than a ranking, and on a small twin which spends its useful life high in the rev range, the P08 is the end that protects the flow.
Care and cleaning
The order matters more than the effort. Air first, from the clean face outwards, which is all most services need. Water next, lukewarm and with a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. Drying last, in open air and all the way through — never with heat, never over a flame — before the PM44S is refitted dry. No stage of that routine involves oil.
