The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Stradale 800 was MV's attempt at a triple you could hang luggage on, and it changes the arithmetic of an air filter more than its appearance suggests. Pressure drop across a filtering medium is not a fixed toll — it rises with the volume of air going through it. A naked bike ridden in bursts pays it briefly. A half-faired machine holding motorway speed with panniers and a passenger pays it for hours at a stretch, on the same piece of cloth.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave, used without oil of any kind
- Filtering surface roughly double that of other performance filters
- 80 µm aperture rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Fits the standard housing directly; the airbox is untouched and the ECU is not reflashed
- Serviced with an air line almost anywhere, rather than with a spare part
- Two-year warranty, and a life expectancy set by the motorcycle rather than by an interval
A cost paid by the hour, not by the moment
Sustained speed is the condition in which intake restriction stops being theoretical. The engine draws air continuously at a high rate, so a loaded element works against its worst case for a whole leg instead of for the few seconds of an overtake. This is also where the doubled filtering area earns its keep, since twice the cloth means a given load sits half as deep and the restriction climbs more slowly. None of it makes the Stradale faster — a drop-in filter does not do that — but across a long day it keeps the bike behaving as it did at the start.
Nothing to declare
A motorcycle used for distance crosses borders and occasionally meets somebody with a clipboard, which is a reason to prefer changes that leave it as it was type-approved. Airbox volume, intake ducting and exhaust are all untouched here, the fuelling remains the factory map, and the only altered item is the medium inside the standard housing. CM135S goes where the MV panel went, and the panel itself can be kept and refitted in minutes if anyone ever asks.
Care and cleaning
On tour the service is a compressor at a petrol station: clean face towards the air line, blow outwards, refit. At home it can be more thorough — lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water shows nothing, then dried slowly in air. Heat has no part in the process at any point, whether from a flame, a heat gun or a radiator, and the element goes back only when completely dry, with nothing sprayed onto it.
