The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Granpasso stayed in Moto Morini's catalogue for a decade, longer than anything else built around this engine, and it is the model in the range most likely to be found somewhere that was never surfaced. On unsealed roads the air filter stops being a routine line on a service schedule and becomes the component that decides how far the machine gets before it wants attention. Choosing what goes in the box is worth more thought here than on any other 1200 Morini.
Key Features
- Holds no oil at all, so nothing can be picked up by the airflow and carried forward
- 80-micron woven aperture with 5,050 l/m²/sec of quoted flow
- Around twice the area of a conventional performance panel, which is what buys the range
- Series airbox, series calibration; the part goes in and nothing else is touched
- Recoverable in the field with any air line, at the end of a bad day
- Two years of cover from the manufacturer, from the date of sale
Why the sticky solution fails on gravel
The reflex answer to dust is a medium that holds more of it, and the traditional way to hold more is a tacky coating on cotton gauze. On an unsealed road the reasoning breaks in two places. Fine mineral dust combines with the oil into a paste, which closes the element considerably faster than its rating implies — the failure arrives early and without ceremony. And whatever the airflow lifts off that coating travels forward onto the hot-film sensor, where a thin film reads as less air than is really passing and the fuelling is trimmed against a figure that is quietly wrong. Nothing on the dashboard reports either event.
Distance is bought with area, not with tack
The dry route gets to the same place from the other side. There is no coating to load up, and the working surface is about twice that of an ordinary performance element, so a given quantity of dust produces a correspondingly smaller rise in resistance and the interval stretches accordingly. When the panel does eventually fill, the remedy is a compressor rather than a spare part: an evening job at a campsite, not a border crossing in search of a dealer. On a bike whose whole purpose is being a long way from help, None of this is a power claim — no filter gives a Granpasso more of that — it is a claim about how far the bike travels before the lid has to come off.
Care and cleaning
Clean face first, air directed outwards, until the dust stops leaving the cloth. After a genuinely bad stretch, wash the CM170S in tepid water with a mild detergent, rinsing again and again until the water finally stays clear. It then needs to dry all the way through in still air at ambient temperature — no fire, no heater, no exhaust manifold, however tempting the shortcut is on tour. Refit it dry, with nothing added.
