Read the two headline figures of the P08 as a pair and one of them is easy to misread. Eighty microns is a dimension. Five thousand and fifty litres per square metre per second is a rate — and the words per square metre carry most of the meaning, because they say that what an element can pass depends as much on how much cloth is folded into the box as on how open the weave is. That second lever is the one PM76S pulls in the RC 8 R.
Key Features
- Woven dry polyester at 80 µm, rated 5,050 l/m²/sec across roughly twice the usual surface
- Threads from ø 22 microns: the filtering happens in the calibrated spacing, not in the fibre
- Straight into the standard housing — no modification, no remap, no ducting changes
- No oil when new and none after washing, so nothing can be drawn onto the intake sensors
- Regenerated with compressed air; water and mild detergent when air is not enough
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
Surface area instead of a wider mesh
An element confined to an unchanged housing cannot simply be made bigger, so the common way to raise flow is to open the mesh, which is paid for in what gets through. Sprint Filter's approach in this range keeps an ordinary 80-micron aperture and folds roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters into the same outline. The two levers work independently: doubling the cloth doubles what a fixed rate per square metre has to work with, while the gap between the threads stays where it was. It is the reason the standard weave can be the standard here rather than a compromise anyone has to accept.
What is fixed, and what actually moves
The housing is fixed by KTM. The aperture is fixed by the medium. The only quantity that moves over the life of the element is how loaded it has become, and it is also the only one the owner has any say in. Compressed air returns the weave towards its starting condition, which means the restriction on a machine ten years into its life can be close to the restriction it had when new. That is not a claim about power — an element inside a series airbox does not make a standard RC 8 R stronger — it is a claim about staying put, which is a duller thing and a more defensible one.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is ever added to this element. Blow the compressor line against its clean face and work outward, so the load leaves by the route it arrived on rather than being driven further in. A gritty spell that survives the air comes out with tepid water and a little mild washing-up liquid, rinsed through until nothing more appears in the water. Drying is passive: still or moving air, for as long as it takes, and never a hot air gun, a radiator or a flame, since heat is what breaks polyester down. PM76S goes back in dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Specified for the airbox of the KTM RC 8 R 1190, listed from 2009 to 2026. The base RC 8, listed from 2008, shares the identical element — two entries, one part number.
