DescriptionThe whole story▼
Ask what an air filter is for and most answers describe flow. The honest answer describes retention: everything the element stops is something that never reaches the piston rings, and on a hard-worked single that is the whole return on the part. Sprint Filter publishes the figure for the P08 weave in the PM200S: it holds back 93.13 per cent of particles at 100 microns, against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton measured the same way. Those two numbers are the reason to fit one, and they say nothing whatever about what the 390 Duke produces.
Key Features
- Woven polyester, used dry: no oil on it when it arrives and none applied later
- Rated at 80 microns, with a published retention of 93.13 per cent at 100 microns
- Around twice the working area of a typical performance element, folded to fill the series housing
- Cleaned with air and refitted; the panel does not leave the workshop in a bin
- Slots into the standard box on the standard fixings, with nothing cut and nothing re-flashed
- Two years of cover from the day of purchase, on a part meant to stay with the bike
What the percentages actually measure
A filtration rating is a size rather than a verdict: the fabric is rated at 80 microns, and the retention figure describes how much of a dust charge at 100 microns it holds on one pass. The threads themselves start at a diameter of 22 microns, a third measurement again and the one most often quoted by mistake. None of it makes the bike quicker. No panel filter inside an unmodified airbox makes a standard motorcycle noticeably more powerful. What the weave offers is an intake restriction that stays where it started, because you clean it back to condition.
Why retention is the number to buy on
Grit that gets past an element does not announce itself. It travels through the throttle body into the combustion chamber and out again, and the harm it does to bore and rings is cumulative and invisible until a compression test tells the story years later. A single of this size spends much of its life at high revs in traffic. Oiled cotton buys its flow by accepting a coarser catch; the dry weave keeps far more of what the road throws up. That trade is the whole argument, and it is an argument about longevity.
Care and cleaning
Blow the element through with the air line held on the clean face, working outwards, so the dirt leaves the way it arrived. When a season of city riding has loaded it beyond what air will shift, wash it in warm water with a little household detergent, rinse it out and stand it in moving air until it is dry — heat guns, radiators and naked flames are the one thing that will finish the fabric off. It goes back in dry, and the service sheet in the Downloads tab shows every step. No oil, at any point.
Fitment & Compatibility
This page covers the KTM 390 Duke, 2017 to 2023; the redesigned 390 Duke from 2024 takes PM293S instead. The element is cut for that airbox specifically rather than trimmed from a universal sheet, and the same code serves thirteen further machines across KTM and Husqvarna — the Fitment tab lists them all with their year windows.
