DescriptionThe whole story▼
Every instruction sheet for a dry filter begins with compressed air, which quietly assumes a compressor. Most riders do not own one. The PM200S is worth having anyway, because the assumption is softer than it looks: what the weave needs is moving air directed at its clean side, and there are several ways to produce that which do not involve a workshop.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave; the ordinary service is air rather than fluids
- Filtering area roughly double that of other performance elements for this airbox
- Nothing needs oiling, so nothing needs judging by feel
- Replaces the standard panel directly, with no modification and no mapping work
- Rated at 80 microns, the road and track specification
- Two years of warranty and a design life matched to the motorcycle
Air without a compressor
A fuel station line will do it, and so will a small tyre inflator with a blow-gun attachment, or a can of the compressed gas sold for cleaning keyboards. Distance matters more than pressure: hold the nozzle a hand's width from the clean face and keep it moving, and the dust lifts out of the weave instead of being driven through it. What you must not do is press the nozzle against the fabric, and what you must not do at all is aim at the dirty side, which packs the load in rather than removing it.
When water is the answer
Occasionally air is not enough — mud thrown up on a wet gravel road dries into the weave and has to be dissolved. That job needs no equipment either: warm water, a little washing-up liquid, gentle agitation with the fingers rather than a brush, a long rinse, and then time. Drying is the only part that cannot be hurried, and it is where elements get ruined, because a heat gun or a radiator will distort the medium. Leave it somewhere with moving air until it is dry through. On a 390 Adventure that is an evening's wait, which is a good argument for doing it before a trip rather than during one.
Care and cleaning
The prohibitions are shorter than the instructions and matter more: never aim air at the dirty face, never scrub the weave with a brush, never apply heat to dry it, and never refit it damp. Everything else is forgiving. Sprint Filter's illustrated maintenance sheet, with the sequence in pictures, is among the files in the Downloads tab. And no stage of this involves oil, which removes the one judgement call an oiled filter asks you to make.
Fitment & Compatibility
This page is the KTM 390 Adventure of 2020 to 2023. The panel matches that airbox, which is shared with thirteen other machines across KTM and Husqvarna; each is named with its years in the Fitment tab.
