The airbox on a 701 Supermoto sees daylight far more often than any filter interval would suggest, and almost never because of the filter. Wheels come off for tyres, the rear end comes apart for a shock, panels come off after a fall, and every one of those jobs puts the element within reach. That makes this bike an unusually good case for a filter you inspect and clean rather than replace, because the opportunity keeps arriving whether or not you planned it. PM74S is dry woven polyester in the standard housing: air through it from the clean side and it goes straight back in.

Repeatability beats an interval

A paper panel travels in one direction only. You can hold it up to the light and form an opinion, but the opinion has nowhere to go except a new part. A washable element has a reference condition instead: it starts clean, it loads, and compressed air brings it back close to where it started, as many times as you care to do it. On a machine whose bodywork is off half a dozen times a season anyway, that converts filter maintenance from a scheduled purchase into something that happens while you are already in there with the tools out.

What a supermoto's air is really like

Cleaner than the name suggests. This is a tarmac motorcycle, ridden in short hard bursts, often at low speed with little cooling airflow, and its dirt is city dirt and brake dust rather than mineral dust off a trail. That is why the standard weave is the right specification for most of them, and why the far finer medium Sprint Filter also lists for this housing is genuinely situational: finer holds back more and passes less, every single day, whether or not the dust ever arrives. And no element inside a standard airbox makes a standard 693 cm³ single noticeably stronger. What it gives is a restriction that stays where you put it.

Care and cleaning

Direct compressed air through the element from the clean side and work outwards. Water with a mild detergent takes over where air gives up, followed by rinsing until the runoff is clear. Then dry in air alone — no heat gun, no hairdryer, no flame — and refit only once the element is dry right through. There is nothing to re-oil.
