Open any accessory catalogue for this motorcycle and the air filter is filed between the exhaust system and the ECU flash, under a heading like performance. It does not belong in that company. An element such as PM160S adds nothing to what the engine produces; what it replaces is a purchase that would otherwise keep coming back for as long as you own the bike.

What it actually replaces

Not horsepower: a recurring order. The factory element is a consumable with a price and an interval, and over a long ownership the true figure is that price taken as many times as the interval comes round, plus the occasions when it was not on the shelf and the bike waited. A washable element removes the repetition rather than the cost of any single instance, which is a duller proposition than the catalogue heading suggests and a more honest one. It is also the reason the part belongs in the servicing pages of a catalogue rather than the tuning ones, filed with the things that keep a motorcycle as it was built.

The one thing it does do for the engine

It holds a filtration specification steady. A paper panel is at its most restrictive on the day it is discarded and at its least on the day it is fitted, and everything in between is a slow drift nobody measures. Cleaning returns this cloth to where it began, so the intake condition resets instead of only ever moving one way. On a naked V4 ridden on public roads — which is what a Streetfighter mostly is — that stability is worth having, and it is the whole of the claim.

Care and cleaning

An air line from the clean face outward covers ordinary service. Water when the cloth has earned it: hand-warm, a small amount of mild detergent, rinsed until nothing further comes away, then dried in air alone — never with heat, never near a flame.
