The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Look at what else this element fits and the Scrambler 400 starts to look unusual. CM61S is catalogued for twenty-four Ducatis, from this 399 cc twin up to the 1198 cc Monster — a three-to-one spread in displacement through one and the same airbox. An element has to be specified so that the thirstiest machine on that list is still properly served, which means the smallest one is drawing through far more cloth than it strictly needs. That is a comfortable position to be in, and worth understanding before you spend anything on a service part.
Key Features
- Woven polyester that runs dry — no oil is used on it at any stage
- Around twice the medium area you would find in other performance filters
- Threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a set aperture instead of pressed out of pulp
- Goes straight into the series airbox in place of the paper panel; fuelling and homologation are untouched
- Cleaned and refitted rather than thrown away — an air line does most services
- Two years of cover from the day you buy it
An engine built to a ceiling
A 399 cc twin exists because a licence class exists, and a manufacturer working to a power ceiling has already spent whatever headroom the design had. Nothing is held back in reserve. Restriction in the intake is therefore not absorbed somewhere — it comes straight off the part of the rev range this bike is actually ridden in. Be clear about the size of the effect, though: swapping a filter does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and anyone promising that is describing something else.
Why the spare capacity matters here
Pressure drop across a filter is not a fixed tax. It climbs as more air is pulled through, and it climbs again as dirt fills the cloth. A medium sized for a much larger engine spends its whole life on this bike at a small fraction of what it can pass, so the drop stays low and moves slowly. Add the washing and it returns to where it began instead of drifting quietly away from it.
Care and cleaning
Most services need nothing but an air line: aim it at the clean face and blow outwards, against the direction the engine pulls. After a bad winter, warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid will finish the job — flush until the run-off is clear, then leave it somewhere airy until dry all the way through. Keep heat away entirely: no hairdryer, no oven, no flame. It goes back in dry, and there is no oiling step to remember. The CM61S service sheet sits under Downloads.
