The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Every filter that has to be oiled has a step in which it can be got wrong. Too much dressing and it runs into the intake; too little and the medium is not doing what it was designed to do; and either way the job has to be repeated correctly every time the element is cleaned. The Monster 821 is the version of this bike with riding modes, traction control and fuelling that all work from a measurement of incoming air, so upstream of that sensor is the last place to introduce a variable. The CM61S has no oiling step at all.
Key Features
- Dry out of the box and dry for good — the P08 is never oiled, before or after washing
- Roughly double the medium area found in other performance filters
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns, held at a calibrated spacing by the weave itself
- Straight replacement for the factory element in the series airbox; the mapping stays as it is
- Compressed air restores it, so there is no re-oiling and no way to over-apply
- Two-year warranty running from the date of purchase
The failure that is hard to trace
An oiled gauze element catches dust on a sticky film, and it does that job well while the film stays where it was put. Heat and hard use mobilise it, and a hot-film sensor sits directly in the path. Contamination there does not fail cleanly: the reading drifts low, the management system works from a wrong number, and every component tests fine individually. A dry medium does not reduce those odds — it removes the mechanism. By the time the symptom is plain enough to chase, the mileage that caused it is long behind you.
Two very different weeks
Commuting silts an element up slowly and invisibly; a hard Sunday puts it under sustained high flow. Neither week is unusual on an 821, and one filter has to suit both without being chosen for either. Twice the surface area copes with both from a lower starting resistance, and because it washes, it comes back to that starting point. What it does not do is make a standard 821 noticeably faster — that was never the promise.
Care and cleaning
Direct compressed air at the inner face and work outwards, so the dirt leaves the way it arrived. For a full clean use hand-warm water and a modest amount of washing-up liquid, rinsing until no suds remain, then air-dry it completely before it goes anywhere near the bike. Heat of any kind is out: no hot air gun, no flame. The service sheet is available in the Downloads tab.
