DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins builds BM 365 for the BMW S1000R and lists it for model years 2014–2020. Damping that fades turns a predictable S1000R into one that has to be ridden around.
Key Features
- Gas-pressurised damper with a piggyback external reservoir
- Adjustable compression damping via the gold click adjuster
- Adjustable rebound damping through a dedicated click adjuster on the damper body
- Integrated hydraulic spring-preload adjuster
- Spring rate as delivered: 75 N/mm, matched to the S1000R
- 36 mm piston diameter
- Adjustable overall length for ride-height and geometry changes
- Ships with spring 21040-21
Damping Performance
With 62 mm of stroke the damping curve has to do its work in a short distance. At 36 mm the piston is large enough that the shim stack, not the orifice, decides the damping. The 335 +4/-2 mm length window lets ride height be set rather than accepted, and ride height sets the steering geometry. Öhlins supplies spring 21040-21 with this unit. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper. The adjuster range is usable end to end rather than only around the middle.
Where This Sits in the Öhlins Line-up
In a twin-tube damper the compression and rebound circuits never share oil, so neither can starve the other. Öhlins uses the same architecture in its racing programme; the TTX GP is that hardware sold over the counter. The twin-tube layout keeps compression and rebound circuits separate and both under pressure, which is what allows the adjusters to have a real, measurable effect across their whole range instead of only in the middle of it.
Materials and Manufacture
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. The eyelets carry spherical bearings rather than rubber bushes, so the damper is not fighting its own mounting.
Why This Machine Needs It
Öhlins covers the 7-year production run of this generation with a single part number, which means the mounting and the linkage stayed unchanged across it. Without a fairing there is no aerodynamic load to settle the chassis, so mechanical grip does all the work.
Fitment and Compatibility
The fitment stated here is the BMW S1000R in its 2014–2020 form, under Öhlins part number BM 365. Öhlins lists no other machine against this number, so it is not a unit that can be adapted to a neighbouring model. Öhlins notes for this application: TTX GP
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the BMW S1000R, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.
Important Notes
- This shock absorber cannot be used together with
- BMW's DDC system.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
