DescriptionThe whole story▼
This is the Öhlins KA 224, released for the Kawasaki W800 as built between 2011 and 2016. The unit it replaces was chosen when the W800 was costed, not when it was developed.
Key Features
- Length 325 mm, set for this chassis
- 93 mm working stroke
- Monotube damper layout
- Spring rate prog.16-26 N/mm, set against this machine's weight
- Ships with spring 00360-04
- Öhlins 36 mm piston
- Gas-pressurised monotube damper with the reservoir integrated into the body
- Listed by Öhlins for the Kawasaki W800 (2011–2016) and no other machine
What This Means on the W800
This part number spans model years 2011 to 2016; earlier and later generations take different numbers. Retro and heritage machines usually inherit their suspension specification from cost targets rather than from chassis development.
Damping Performance
A 36 mm piston gives the oil a large working area, so the force curve stays flat as temperature rises. Öhlins supplies spring 00360-04 with this unit. Stroke is 93 mm, which is the travel Öhlins has to work with on this linkage. The spring is wound to prog.16-26 N/mm, and alternative rates are catalogue items. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to. Preload is set separately again, and preload is what determines static sag rather than damping.
How Öhlins Builds It
Spring and damper are separate part numbers, so a rate change does not mean a new unit. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with.
The STX 36 Twin in Detail
Both units are supplied as a matched pair with the same part number and the same valving. Preload is set by a threaded collar on each side, and both sides must be set equally. Rebound adjustment is at the lower eyelet on most numbers in this range.
Fitment and Compatibility
What follows applies to the Kawasaki W800 built 2011–2016, which is the machine KA 224 is listed for. Because the settings are model-specific, fitting it to a related machine would mean running the wrong specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany) for the Kawasaki W800. That means no TÜV appointment and no entry in the registration document — the paperwork comes in the box.
