Setting It Up for the SPORTSTER XL883N IRON
This part number spans model years 2009 to 2018; earlier and later generations take different numbers. Short travel and substantial mass are a hard combination: there is little room to absorb anything, so damping quality matters more.
About the STX 36 Twin Range
Classic and retro machines with twin rear shocks are usually let down by their dampers long before their frames. The STX 36 Twin replaces both sides with Öhlins units carrying a 36 mm piston, adjustable rebound and — critically for a bike that carries a pillion — a usable preload range. Both units are supplied as a matched pair with the same part number and the same valving.
Damping and Adjustment
Öhlins uses a 36 mm piston here: more area, lower oil velocity, less heat generated for the same force. A prog. 16-26 N/mm spring comes fitted, and it is the first thing to reconsider if the rider is heavy or light. Öhlins quotes 103 mm of damper stroke for this fitment. Öhlins specifies 338 mm here, so ride height stays as the factory set it. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to. Preload is set separately again, and preload is what determines static sag rather than damping.
How Öhlins Builds It
The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.
Fitment and Compatibility
Part number HD 916 and the Harley Davidson SPORTSTER XL883N IRON (2009–2018) belong together; other model years take other numbers. Nothing about it is generic — the mounting dimensions alone rule out a different model.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany) for the Harley Davidson SPORTSTER XL883N IRON. That means no TÜV appointment and no entry in the registration document — the paperwork comes in the box.
