DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins builds HD 145 for the Harley Davidson Sportster XL 1200 C and lists it for model years 2011–2016. A factory shock is set for an average rider on an average road, and few riders are either.
Key Features
- Öhlins fits a prog.16-26 N/mm spring to this application
- Bolts to the Harley Davidson Sportster XL 1200 C (2011–2016) using the standard mounting points
- Emulsion-type damper without a separating piston
- Spring part number 00360-04 fitted
- Monotube damper layout
- Öhlins 36 mm piston
- 296 mm between mounting eyes
- 71 mm working stroke
The STX 36 Twin in Detail
Twin-shock machines share the load between two units, and that changes everything about how each one is specified: half the load, but also half the leverage and often a steeper mounting angle. Classic and retro machines with twin rear shocks are usually let down by their dampers long before their frames. The STX 36 Twin is built as a pair for exactly this geometry, with a 36 mm piston in a monotube body.
Damping and Adjustment
The available stroke of 71 mm sets how much wheel travel the shim stack has to control. Spring 00360-04 is what ships with the damper; harder and softer rates are available. Spring rate is prog.16-26 N/mm as delivered, which sets static sag for a rider of typical weight. A 36 mm working face means lower oil speed for a given wheel speed, and lower oil speed means less foaming. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper. Öhlins publishes a baseline setting for each part number, which is the sensible starting point.
Construction and Material Quality
The damper body is hard-anodised aluminium, which resists both corrosion and the thermal cycling a rear shock lives with. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Spring and damper are separate part numbers, so a rate change does not mean a new unit.
Why This Machine Needs It
A cruiser is often ridden two-up with luggage, which is the load case the standard suspension rarely handles well. The 2011–2016 generation kept the same chassis dimensions throughout, so one Öhlins number serves the whole run. At 1200 cc the Sportster XL 1200 C makes enough torque to load the rear hard on corner exit, and the damper has to keep the wheel in contact while that happens.
Fitment and Compatibility
The fitment stated here is the Harley Davidson Sportster XL 1200 C in its 2011–2016 form, under Öhlins part number HD 145. It is model-specific rather than universal: length, stroke and valving are all set for this chassis.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany) for the Harley Davidson Sportster XL 1200 C. That means no TÜV appointment and no entry in the registration document — the paperwork comes in the box.
