How Öhlins Builds It
Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.
Damping and Adjustment
A 36 mm piston gives the oil a large working area, so the force curve stays flat as temperature rises. A 33 N/mm spring comes fitted, and it is the first thing to reconsider if the rider is heavy or light. 68 mm of stroke is what the Dyna Low Rider FXDL's linkage allows, and the shim stack is set for exactly that. Spring part number 00281-66 or 66419-032 is a separate catalogue item, so a rate change is inexpensive. The two adjusters do genuinely separate jobs, which is what makes methodical setup possible. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper.
The Dyna Low Rider FXDL in Particular
Short travel and substantial mass are a hard combination: there is little room to absorb anything, so damping quality matters more.
The STX 36 Blackline in Detail
Servicing is identical to the standard STX 36. The finish suits classic and retro machines where chrome and black dominate. Blackline in the STX 36 range means black anodising and a black spring, with the 36 mm damping hardware unchanged.
