DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Harley Davidson Dyna Fat Bob FXDF in its 2007–2017 form takes Öhlins part number HD 763. On the Dyna Fat Bob FXDF the rear unit does most of the work of keeping the chassis settled.
Key Features
- Adjustable overall length for ride-height and geometry changes
- Bolts to the Harley Davidson Dyna Fat Bob FXDF (2007–2017) using the standard mounting points
- Adjustable compression damping at the reservoir
- Monotube damper layout
- Spring rate as delivered: 33 N/mm, matched to the Dyna Fat Bob FXDF
- Gas-pressurised damper with a piggyback external reservoir
- Damper stroke 68 mm
- Length 305 +10/-0 mm, set for this chassis
Where This Sits in the Öhlins Line-up
On a retro or a classic twin the black finish often looks more period-correct than gold, and nothing about the damping changes. Servicing is identical to the standard STX 36. The finish suits classic and retro machines where chrome and black dominate.
How Öhlins Builds It
The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. The eyelets carry spherical bearings rather than rubber bushes, so the damper is not fighting its own mounting.
The Dyna Fat Bob FXDF in Particular
This part number spans model years 2007 to 2017; earlier and later generations take different numbers. A cruiser is often ridden two-up with luggage, which is the load case the standard suspension rarely handles well.
Damping Performance
With 68 mm of stroke the damping curve has to do its work in a short distance. A 36 mm piston gives the oil a large working area, so the force curve stays flat as temperature rises. The spring is wound to 33 N/mm, and alternative rates are catalogue items. Overall length is adjustable within 305 +10/-0 mm, enough to change rear ride height and with it how quickly the Dyna Fat Bob FXDF turns. The adjuster range is usable end to end rather than only around the middle. A single click produces a change most riders can detect, which is not true of every adjustable damper.
Fitment and Compatibility
Öhlins releases HD 763 against the Harley Davidson Dyna Fat Bob FXDF (2007–2017). It is model-specific rather than universal: length, stroke and valving are all set for this chassis.
Road Approval
Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Harley Davidson Dyna Fat Bob FXDF, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.
