DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Öhlins SD 021 steering damper is engineered for the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and ZX-10RR across all generations from 2008 to 2026, bringing certified road legality and race-proven stability to one of the most demanding supersports on the market. With German type approval (ABE) covering the ZX-10R through 2020, this is a plug-in upgrade that clears both the technical inspection and the track gate.
Key Features
- German ABE type approval for Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (2008–2010 and 2011–2020), confirming full road legality on public roads in Germany without additional documentation.
- Wide adjustment range across all damping settings, allowing the unit to be dialled in precisely for everything from road touring to circuit use.
- Type code R&T (Road and Track): a single damper that transitions between road and race duties without compromise.
- 65 mm stroke tuned to the geometry of the ZX-10R/RR chassis for progressive, confidence-inspiring feedback at all speeds.
- Original mount installation position — no chassis modification required; the damper seats exactly where the factory intended.
- Available as a universal unit in multiple lengths and adaptable via accessory mounting kits for race machines and custom builds.
Certified Safety You Can Ride On
Regulatory compliance is not an afterthought with the SD 021 — it is central to the product's design. The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (2008–2010) and ZX-10R (2011–2020) are covered by a full ABE (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis), Germany's national type approval for aftermarket components, meaning the damper is road-legal without the need for individual expert sign-off. For the ZX-10R (2021–2026), a general component assessment (Allg. Teilegutachten) is currently in preparation. The ZX-10RR (2018–2026) is supplied without a German Teilegutachten; riders should verify local registration requirements before fitting.
Engineering and Performance
Öhlins designs the SD 021 around a broad adjustment range that makes it genuinely useful across riding disciplines. On the road, softening the damping allows the bars to react naturally at low speed. On track, winding in more resistance tames the instability that high-speed braking and mid-corner bumps can provoke on a 200 bhp-class machine. The R&T type code reflects exactly that dual-purpose brief: one unit, two very different environments, no need to swap components between sessions.
The 65 mm stroke is matched to the ZX-10R platform's steering geometry, so the damper works through its full travel without binding at lock-to-lock or running out of travel during aggressive inputs. Mounting at the original position means geometry and steering offset remain factory-correct — an important consideration for any bike where chassis balance is calibrated to tight tolerances.
