Why the Rate Holds

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Installation
Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
