How Öhlins Makes Them
Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
Fitting
Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
