How Öhlins Makes Them
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.
Dimensions
The 67 mm bore and 250 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 65 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Is 65 N/mm Right?
Too soft a spring shows up as a rear end that sits low and uses its travel early; too firm, as one that stays high and skips over small bumps. Static and rider sag, measured rather than estimated, are the reliable way to confirm that 65 N/mm is right. Rider weight in full kit, a pillion and luggage all belong in the calculation — the weight of the machine alone does not decide the rate.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. On a rising-rate linkage the effective rate at the wheel changes through the stroke, so the same spring can feel soft early in the travel and firm deep into it.
Applications
Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Selection is by measurement. If the inner diameter and free length suit your shock, the remaining question is the rate.
Installation
Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. Changing a rear spring means taking the shock off the machine; where backing off the preload does not free the spring retainer, a proper spring compressor does the rest. With the shock off the machine anyway, it is a sensible moment to check the mounting bolts and, where fitted, the linkage bearings.
Road Approval
