Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

Where This Rate Belongs
On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.
Applications
A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Fitting
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
