DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 05678-02 is a shock absorber spring rated at 27.5 N/mm, 340 mm long with a 67 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 27.5 N/mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 67 mm
- Öhlins part number 05678-02
- 215 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 340 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
How Öhlins Makes Them
Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.
Dimensions
The 67 mm bore and 340 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 27.5 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.
Installation
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
