DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06390-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 24-33 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.
Key Features
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 06390-05
- Free length 230 mm
- 120 mm of usable stroke
- Measured spring rate 24-33 N/mm (progressive)
- Progressively wound
How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.
Size and Rate
At 230 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
Rate and Sag
As a progressive spring it starts at the lower figure and firms up towards the higher one as it compresses, which is what the range 24-33 N/mm describes. Static and rider sag, measured rather than estimated, are the reliable way to confirm that 24-33 N/mm is right. Whether 24-33 N/mm counts as soft or firm depends on the machine: the same figure behaves very differently on a twin-shock rear end and on a monoshock working through a linkage.
Rate and the Linkage
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. A shock absorber spring works through the rear suspension's leverage — a linkage or the swingarm itself — which is why the figure on it is so much higher than a front spring rate.
Applications
This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.
What Fitting Involves
Note the preload setting before dismantling — it is a useful reference when setting up the new spring. Keep the old spring until the new rate has been ridden and the sag figures confirmed. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
