How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

What the Rear Spring Decides
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.
What Fitting Involves
Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
